Climate Aware Pastoral Care SEMINAR
There is a rising tide of distress in our world. Mostly it sits under the surface of our normal conversations and daily lives, but it bursts through. A child may weep for the dolphins. A young person may declare that the planet is f#*d so there's no point in going to school.
Global warming (and all the other damage to our environment) has massive impacts on people. But to look at the church in Aotearoa you wouldn't spot much pastoral response. We are terribly good at ignoring climate and focusing on heaven. I passionately believe that our Father in Heaven longs to comfort and connect with people no matter where they're at. So I believe that an awareness of climate change is a vital component of pastoral care and evangelism in 2024.
I would go so far as to say that feeling distressed about God's creation is a healthy thing. We who follow Jesus seek to live from the heart of God, and God's world is hurting.
I invite you talk this over with me on Monday 29 April.

This seems to be work I am given to do: to articulate the pastoral challenges of climate change. By which I mean the impact on people and church of a warming world. How do our spirits, hearts and minds respond to evidence of climate change? What are the flow-on effects for faith communities? How do we care well for each other, in the name of Christ? I want to start at the beginning, look beneath the surface, and point towards practical implications for pastoral ministry. ....
