Trinity
I made a powerpoint for Trinity Sunday with these gorgeous images. My apologies - my normal policy is to only use photos online that I personally own or have permission to use. This does not apply to any of these beautiful artworks - these are all simply googled. So all credit to the artists; if you do wish to use any of these images I encourage you to google them again yourself, for any copyright information.
Call to Worship
Greetings in the great name and beautiful mystery of the Trinity
O Father who sought me
O Son who bought me
O Holy Spirit who taught me.
(time of silence)
Now in this moment we gather into stillness
Here in this place we rest in everlasting arms.
(time of silence)
Breath of God, breathe in us
Word of God, speak to us
Love of God, surround and bless
Holy Trinity, live in us
until we live in you, come alive in your life
find ourselves in unity,
grow into the full stature of Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit, to the glory of the Father. Amen.

Sweetest Mystery by Malcolm Gordon
with powerpoint Sweetest mystery, surest certainty - there’s a family in the heavens with a place for me. Here and now we see, and through eternity, we are people who are cradled in the Trinity. Holy, holy, holy Lord (x3) is the God who raises us to this family of love. Praise the Father who is making all things new by the Spirit and the Son here in grace and truth. There is room for you. There is a life that’s full. There is love here for the world, not just for a few. Blessing
The Three in One bless you. The guarding of the Father of life be on you, The guarding of loving Christ be on you, The guarding of Holy Spirit be on you to aid you and enfold you each day and every night of your lives. |
Prayer of St Patrick
I bind unto myself today The strong Name of the Trinity, By invocation of the same, The Three in One and One in Three. I arise today through the strength of heaven; Light of the sun, Splendor of fire, Speed of lightning, Swiftness of the wind, Depth of the sea, Stability of the earth, Firmness of the rock. I bind unto myself today The strong Name of the Trinity, By invocation of the same, The Three in One and One in Three. I arise today through God's strength to pilot me; God's might to uphold me, God's wisdom to guide me, God's eye to look before me, God's ear to hear me, God's word to speak for me, God's hand to guard me, God's way to lie before me, God's shield to protect me, God's hosts to save me Afar and anear, Alone or in a multitude. I bind unto myself today The strong Name of the Trinity, By invocation of the same, The Three in One and One in Three. |
TRINITY of one substance
If a child asked you what God is made of, how might you have a go at answering the question?
… go on, give it a go. What is God? What is God made of?
I’m going to have a go this morning. In 10 minutes. Wish me luck.
So what's with the 3-in-1 or is is 1-in-3? This sermon explains how God is one being, one substance, with 3 ways of communicating with us.

The Trinity: Being and doing
John 16:5-15
Romans 5:1-5
I have a question for you this morning – are you more of a ‘do-er’ or a ‘be-er’?
If you had to choose, are you a person who gains most of your identity and purpose from the things you do and achieve, or do you gain most of your identity and purpose from who you are, and who you are there for?
The ‘being-ness’ of all things flows out of the being-ness of God with the Word. Even before the Word is spoken it exists in relationship. John’s gospel begins here, and John’s theology draws us deeper and deeper into being-in-relation

CELTIC KNOT: 'The Strong Name of the Trinity'
I bind unto myself today
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.
(Prayer of St Patrick)
What kind of God don't you believe in? We have a thing or two to learn from the ancient Celts about how to believe in God. Theirs is an intimate God, a safe God:
I lie down this night with Spirit
And Spirit will lie down with me.
The Three of my love
will be lying down with me.
Theirs is a God of mystery and unity more than rational logic. The Three in One and One in Three is "deeply embedded in daily life"
(Jan Richardson: www.paintedprayerbook.com)
John 16:12-15
Romans 5:1-5
This sermon is an invitation to reflect on the model of God you grew up with, and to allow space for the closeness and mysteriousness and loving power of the Trinity to flow more in your life.
It also comes with a print-out of Celtic prayers and Celtic Knot pictures (which are great to colour in!)
