Psalm 69: The Mud Psalm
Save me, God! I am slipping deeper in the mud.
I am sinking under the water!
Don’t let me go down. Do not give me up to death!
My hope is almost gone, and pain is everywhere.
The crowd has turned against me,
they want me to be killed.
I’ve done no wrong but they yelled insults at me.
I cry out in thirst and they gave me vinegar to drink.
I have become a sign of shame.
For your sake I go through this humiliation.
For you will save me! I will thank you, worship you,
praise you with all of heaven and earth!
This is the sacrifice that you accept.
Come to life, all who seek God!
Praise God, all who love him!
Psalm 69 is a brilliant example of Jesus fulfilling the prophecy of the Psalms but also turning it around
and making it his own.
When the Psalmist is attacked unjustly he responds:
“Add guilt to their guilt. Never let them off the hook.
Blot them out of the book of life!” (verse 27-28)
When Jesus is being killed he responds:
“Father, forgive them for they don’t know what they do.”
(Luke 23:34)
